Information
The year 2013 saw the activation of the eight schools of the University of Padua as required by law no. 240 of 30 December 2010. The School of Science includes courses at the former Faculty of Sciences and the former Department of Statistics.
Schools have responsibility for coordination and rationalization of educational activities, including the proposed establishment, activation, modification, decommissioning or closure of courses of study, as well as management of common services.
The list of the eight schools of the University is shown on: http://www.unipd.it/en/university/scientific-and-academic-structures/schools
The School of Science brings together a vast array of programmes, ranging from astrophysics and cosmology to data science, from biology to geoscience, from mathematics to sustainable chemistry. It is organised in 6 Departments:
- Biology (DiBio)
- Physics and Astronomy "Galileo Galilei" (DFA)
- Mathematics "Tullio Levi-Civita" (DM)
- Chemical Sciences (DiSC)
- Statistical Sciences
- Geosciences
During the transitional period, by the termination of the Faculty (1 January 2012), the activation of the schools, the structures that temporarily took the place of the former Faculty were the Units for Integrated Education (UOI). The Coordinator of UOI of Sciences Moreno was Prof. Meneghetti, that of UOI of Statistical Sciences was Prof. Guido Masarotto.
The symbol of the School of Science is an Owl and a Sphere. The Owl, representing wisdom, holds the Sphere, representing the world, meaning that Science can only properly operate in the clarity of Wisdom.
In 1399 the University of Padua (1222) separated in University of Artists, devoted to the liberal arts, and in University of Jurists until reunification in 1806. The Faculty of Mathematical, Physical and Natural Sciences is the direct heir of the University Artists', together with the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Humanities. The current designation of 1873 replaces the previous sequence: Faculty physico-mathematical, philosophical faculty, Faculty of philosophy and mathematics, mathematics faculty, study math. The Dean sometimes took the alternative title of mayor or director.
